How to Get Your Kids to Love Going to School

About his three D's and two F's, Joey said, "We went to Canada to visit relatives. Then I was sick for a couple of days." Now, what do a trip to Canada and a nasty cold have to do with grades? Everything! As educator Richard White put it, "It may seem obvious that children with the best school attendance are the best performers, but that link is proving even stronger than educators suspected."

Remember S. Silversteins, "Sick," about the kid who comes up with every ailment under the sun until his mother tells him it's Saturday? We all have days when getting out of bed seems out of the question. But haul ourselves out we do-something about being responsible, dependable. Why would we expect anything less from our children? It seems we do, however.

Take Canada, for example. Joey's family vacation took place when school was in session, not during an official holiday-and yet there are plenty of those. Just think winter and spring breaks; think no-school summers! Nevertheless, parents keep taking off with their kids; the favorite reason, naturally, is for an educational trip. As if all that learning down there in Disney World can't wait till June.

In Newsweek's "Where Are the Parents," John McCormick wrote, "Many parents behave as though the school exists for their child alone; a particularly annoying sub-species of the self-absorbed pulls kids out of class for family vacations and asks teachers to prepare a week's worth of lessons, presumably to be administered by the ski patrol." Couldn't have said it better myself. Don't do it!!

In its "You're Part of the Equation, Too," the Pennsylvania State Education Association voiced its disapproval, saying, "Absenteeism affects more than just the child. The teacher must struggle to fit extra time into a full schedule to help the student catch up. And since learning is a continuing, connected process, if a student misses Tuesday's lesson, Wednesday's lesson may not make much sense." Pay such a high price only in the case of illness or the loss of loved ones, and in the meantime:

1. Set a reasonable bedtime for your child and stick to it, or risk that she won't want to get up the next morning and, once at school, won't be very alert.

2. Besides a good night's sleep, provide a healthy diet to help ward off infections and maintain energy levels.

3. Schedule all dentist, orthodontist, and routine doctor appointments for after-school hours.

4. Don't buy the line that he's too tired to go to school. Going there every day is his job and is as important as your own.

5. Serve as a role model, going to work even when exhausted, behind on your to-do list, or coming down with the sniffles.

6. Most schools will gather work only after someone has missed three consecutive days of school. That's too long to wait, so, when sick, have your child ask a classmate to gather all assignments, leaving them in the main office for you to pick up or dropping them off. Then once she's better, get her started on all that collected school work.

7. Save trips and visits to out-of-town relatives for school holidays and vacations. If you must take your child out of school for such a trip, insist that he collect work in advance from all teachers and make sure that it's all done by the time you return.

8. Place a high value on the work of schools, reminding your child to show up, be counted, and work hard. Few exceptions.

Action Bible Songs: 17 Classic Christian Songs for Kids

Action Bible Songs: 17 Classic Christian Songs for Kids
Customer Review: An Absolute Joy To Watch and Listen To!

If you want a great Christian song video for the kids, THIS is THE ONE to have! The little cuties love it and so do the older ones and so do my husband and I. It is so much nicer than any similar Bible song videos I've heard. The kids love to watch and learn the hand signals to the songs. What a great purchase it was! I bought the CD, too. This will be something the whole family will listen to for many years to come.

Customer Review: Good light, could be brighter

I purchased 2 lights, one came with a base(green) & the other with an adapter plug that plugs into the back of the light(orange). I love the green one, I actually use it in my bedroom, but the orange one is not very bright. I can't use it in my toddler's room, not enough light for him. I actually use it in the hall upstairs. I don't think it is enough light to change a dirty diaper (#2) unless you have it right there, attached to your wrist!! But it is a great light for an older child & even a parent! Very safe for the child to hold.

Melissa and Doug Band in a Box

Melissa and Doug Band in a Box
Little musicians can form a traveling band with this compact wooden music set. Featuring ten fun musical pieces, this quality kit is the perfect way to introduce youngsters to musical play. Pieces include a colorfully designed pair of maracas, hand cymbals, tambourine, triangle and two other wooden noisemakers. Every piece fits conveniently into a sturdy wooden storage case, making clean up a piece of cake.

Customer Review: Great Set

This is a wonderful treasure for any budding musician. Very nice, wood crafted intruments that can stand a good pounding (and stomping, throwing, bending).

I only wish it came in a lidded box/container to make storage more efficient.

Sassafras La Cloche Brick Oven

Sassafras La Cloche Brick Oven
This heavy stoneware dish and lid from Sassafras brings an ancient Roman and Greek cooking method to the present day. Once used as a portable oven for cooking bread, fish, and meats, la cloche (or cooking bell) now helps modern cooks bake lighter, crustier bread and juicier fish and meats. The dish also doubles as a rustic serving plate for finished foods. To use, arrange dough or meat on the bottom dish, cover with the domed lid, and place in the oven on the lowest oven rack. Be sure to season the dish and lid before use with a coating of cooking oil for best results.

Customer Review: Breaking Bread

First I must say I use Amazon whenever I possibly can because of their customer service. I bought this Sassafras La Cloche to help me improve my sourdough bread making process. The first round loaf I made under the bell was beautiful. The second time I used the la cloche, warming the entire unit in the oven from 0-425 degrees caused the bottom of the la cloche to crack at about 375 degrees. I notified Amazon who within two days replaced the entire unit, no questions asked. Having read other reviews of this product, I see quite a few people have had the same problem with the bottom plate. I am afraid to use the bottom plate again, so I use it to store the finished product. It is a great crumb catcher. I substituted the bottom portion with a ceramic pizza pan and set the La cloche lid on top. Works great and the bread is outstanding. Thanks Amazon!

Customer Review: Great learning game!

My children loved the adventure game so much that they were willing to do the math required to solve the puzzles. It made a great review for them to use over the summer.

They even wanted to play the game again after finishing it the first time.

They have loved Reader Rabbit so much that they play "bad pie rats" and "bunny games" when they build hideouts. Somehow, Reader Rabbit has become the main theme in their pretend play.

Nancy Drew - Stay Tuned for Danger

Nancy Drew - Stay Tuned for Danger
NANCY DREW - STAY TUNED FOR DANGER (WIN 95,98)

Customer Review: Definitely NOT 5 stars

My conscience wouldn't let me leave this item with a 5 star review. My sister and I both agree that this was the worst of all the Nancy Drew Games. This was the only one where we got stuck and had to let the game sit for about 2 years before becoming desperate enough for a mystery game to go back and finish it. It's dry, dull and did I say "Dry and Dull?" Don't let this be the first or only Nancy Drew you buy. In fact, you should only buy this in the 4 or 5 pack like Nancy Drew 75th Anniversary.

The very first episode is difficult to maneuver since you have to change discs, but at least it was cute, set in a high school and a diner. The next couple of games are a little difficult to move around. But, by #3 Message in a Haunted Mansion and #4 Treasure In The Royal Tower they really start getting good. The best are (my order): Nancy Drew - The Secret of Shadow Ranch, Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand, Nancy Drew - Curse of Blackmoor Manor, Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Nancy Drew: Danger on Deception Island, and Nancy Drew: Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon. Though short and without as many fun puzzles and challenges, Nancy Drew: Secret Of the Old Clock and Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek were both very cute. And we still like to go back to Nancy Drew: The Creature of Kapu Cave to go fishing, snorkeling and make necklaces.

I hope you have fun with these and I fervently hope that some other companies would catch on that there is a market for this type of lighthearted and low-violence gaming!!
