What Every Parent Needs To Know About Teaching Kids Math

So you want to help your kids with their math homework? Or try to get them a little bit more interested in this important subject?

Excellent. Just make sure you don't inadvertently make things worse.

Due to lack of understanding, some parents can unknowingly create more confusion and increase the stress on the child.

Here are six tips to help you and your kids get the best out of your 'math moments' together:

1. See math from the child's perspective

Math aptitudes vary a great deal from person to person. One child has a flair for math while another struggles to understand and quickly forgets.

Realize that the child is not at fault if they don't understand something that is crystal clear to you. Mathematical objects and relationships are extremely subtle, because they are just ideas.

Help your child understand these abstract ideas by relating them to something in the real world.

As a simple example, the classic "If I have 12 apples and give away 5 apples, how many apples do I have left?" is much more meaningful than "12-5=?"

2. Know "where they're at"

To teach a child, you first need to know their current level of knowledge and understanding.

You can find this out by asking a question about the topic being studied.

If they answer wrong, first try re-phrasing your question.

If they still answer incorrectly, then ask them a simpler question.

Keep asking progressively more basic questions until you get a correct answer.

When you know where they're at, you know where to start teaching.

3. Make math a game

Children vary in their attitude to math. Some enjoy it, some are indifferent, and some truly detest it.

But all children love to play. So find subtle ways to introduce math as a 'cool thing to do'.

Invent simple games like: "I'll say a number, you add on seven".

Or: "I'll name a price, you tell me the change from 10 dollars".

You can also include math in other areas of your child's life.

For example, ask: "If you save your pocket money, how long will it take to get the money to buy this thing you want?" Then get your child to add up the savings every week.

4. Always be positive

Success brings confidence, failure the opposite.

So always praise success and be genuinely pleased. Math should be rewarding for the child.

And never show disappointment or scold them for getting an answer wrong.

If your child answers incorrectly, ask them if they are sure of their answer. Or ask them a simpler question and build up in easy stages to the original question.

Really, incorrect answers are simply a clue to what misunderstandings are in the child's mind or what they don't know.

5. Build on strengths

Children vary with the kind of math they can do or like.

A child poor at number work may find geometry really easy. On the other hand a genius with numbers may not be able to deal with geometrical objects.

I know a first-rate math teacher who cannot visualize objects. At school I could quickly answer math questions, but when it came to a certain topic I just couldn't get my mind around it, yet another boy seemed to know all the answers.

You need to build on your child's strengths. Let them show how good they are at something, and try to combine it with what they are not so good at.

For example, perhaps your son is good at geometry but not arithmetic. Ask him to imagine a cube framework made of wire. Then ask how much wire would be needed if each edge was 5cm long.

6. Be prepared to repeat yourself

As every teacher knows, you can't assume that what you taught yesterday is understood, or even remembered, today. Assume nothing and be pleased with whatever they recall.

You may have to go over the same thing again and again. But know that each time through, it's making a deeper impact - things are happening on a subtle level.

Follow these tips and your kids will enjoy increased confidence in the math class. And you'll find yourself a lot less stressed out at math homework time too!

Customer Review: An ok game

This game is, i beleive, origionally a asian gsme because the charictures are drawn in anime. The game is fun for awhile but then gets as little duller. You rescue animals with either a teen boy or girl and help feed, treat, trqain and clean up after them. I am on the eighteenth "level" and am getting a little bored just feeding anf treating. you get new animal alot but don't do anything different with them. it's ok.

Customer Review: My 4-yr-old LOVES this game!

My 4-yr-old LOVES this game! He loves driving around Radiator Springs, and has really gotten into the races too. He loves jumping up high in the air with the remote to make his car fly (I've actually seen him put his car through the top of a tree!). He chooses a different paint job for each of the cars so it is like racing a new car each time.

I think he would play this for hours at a time if we let him. Great game for young kids who love the movie Cars and driving really fast.

Customer Review: JUNK!!!

What a piece of junk - I would have given it 0 stars but that wasn't an option. I bought these for my son for Christmas - he used them twice and they quit working. I called Motorola for assistance and they told me to do a couple of things (like change the batteries), none of which worked, and they weren't helpful at all. Spend a few extra bucks and get another brand and type.

Happy Feet (Full Screen Edition)

Happy Feet (Full Screen Edition)
In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in Antarctica, you're nobody unless you can sing - which is unfortunate for Mumble (ELIJAH WOOD), who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own tune...tap dancing. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria (BRITTANY MURPHY), happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hoppity" ways. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins - the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon (ROBIN WILLIAMS), the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru (also voiced by ROBIN WILLIAMS), a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make all the difference in the world.

Customer Review: Long, boring & preachy

My kid works at the theater so we see our movies for free. Usually, when the movie is bad I spin it to "thank goodness it was free." I wanted a refund after this one! So very boring, full of innuendo, absurd story, & soooo very long! How in the world could penguins learn these songs anyway?? Do they get MTV? How could a director who can make such fantastic variety of great movies (Mad Max & Babe) make this turkey? The trailers & commercials for this movie were totally misleading. It doesn't just stick to the social misfit plot. I was shocked it got an oscar nod and worse, won over two vastly superior movies, Cars and Monster House. MH should have won. I would have given this one a razzie, if they have an animated category.

mckenzie kids diaper bags For Your Reading Pleasure
Do you know the 6 things to look for when buying a kids magic kit online?

You want to get the best magic kit for your kids. I don't want your kids to be disappointed by an inferior or inappropriate magic kit.

Here are six things to look for when shopping for a kids magic kit.

1. Specific suggested age range: Every kid should have an age group that it was created for. For example a lot of magic kits are sold for "ages 4 to 104". Well, what that means is that half of the tricks are appropriate for kids and half are good for adults. The problem with this is that most kids will get frustrated because 50% of the trick are too hard for them to learn. Kids want to learn all of the tricks in the magic kit...not just half.

2. Instructions that are fun: You want to have the instructions for your kids magic kit to be fun and exciting. For example, you don't want a magic kit with just printed instructions that have no illustrations.

Studies have show that over 61% of kids learn best visually, so getting a kids magic kit with DVD instructions is ideal.

3. Item should ship out within 24 hours: If a website doesn't have a product in stock, it shouldn't be listed on their website. You don't want to wait 2 weeks for them to get the item instock, you want your kids magic kit promptly! A surefire way to tell if a site has an item in stock is that their shopping cart checkout page will have their realtime stock listed of each item they carry.

4. Lots of Testimonials: Every site should have testimonials or reviews from actual parents about their kids reactions to the magic kits. An endorsement from someone like David Copperfield is impressive...but he doesn't have kids and isn't necessarily a good judge of what kids nowadays think is cool, but other parent know what kids like!

5. Secure check out: When you begin the checkout part of your order, make sure the page is secure so that your information can't be stolen. Most online shopping carts only operate in secure mode during the part of checkout when you enter your personal information, and that's fine.

Here are two ways you can tell if you are submitting your information at a secure site:
#1 look at the address bar in your internet browsers window it should begin like this https:// The "s" in the https means secure.
#2 a closed (locked) padlock will appear at the bottom of your browsers window.

6. Customer service phone line: Every site should have a phone number you can call to ask any questions you might have about their kids magic kits or to place your order over the phone. Having a phone number to call is basic customer service, and I would be skeptical of any site that doesn't want you to call.

Now that you know the six things to look for, I'm confidant that you will find a kids magic kit that is fun, and age appropriate for you children.

Customer Review: Bedtime relief!

We played this CD for the first time tonight as my 5-year-old was going to bed. Five-star results! Lately bedtime has been a zoo with her repeatedly getting out of bed and/or asking to be sat with until she falls asleep. Tonight I stayed with her for a couple of stories (the first one is a bit hokey), but then she stayed in bed and fell asleep before the CD was over. I am one relieved and hopeful mom.

adidas BTB LT NBA Lakers Basketball Shoe
While your newborn isn't yet ready for school, everyone can appreciate the old-school LA cool. These infant shoes give the next generation a classic Laker look.

Customer Review: Great Little Lace-Up Shoe

This is a great little lace-up shoe that has an insole foot measuring guide (removeable) to get the right fit. At this price there is no need to purchase a bigger size to "grow into." I purchased extra pairs to keep at school & day care. Lots of colors to choose from, quick shipping (I ordered standard delivery & got it in 2 days!), and reasonable price. I'll order more as my son's feet grow.

Joe Dirt (Dol)

Joe Dirt (Dol)
Another of those cut-and-paste comedies from Adam Sandler's production company starring one of Sandler's erstwhile Saturday Night Live colleagues, The Adventures of Joe Dirt finds the magnificently caustic David Spade emasculated by a sentimental script and shapeless, haphazard cutting. Spade plays the title character, a white-trash orphan in search of the parents who abandoned him at the Grand Canyon. The humor is supposed to come from Joe's misadventures, his redneck gullibility, and his encounters with such figures as a serial killer, a wacked-out janitor (Christopher Walken), and a lovable gal (Jamie Pressly) who may, unfortunately, turn out to be his sister. But the squishier requirements of the story, requiring the audience to feel deeply for the pain of Spade's caricature, are an irritant and force Spade to veer from the nastier stuff he does so well. With Kid Rock, Dennis Miller. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: David Spade + Mullet = Funny

Joe Dirt is the gut-bustingly funny tale of a character by the same name, payed by David Spade. He's a complete loser working as a janitor when he gets spotted and highlighted by a radio host (Dennis Miller) named Xander Kelly. The show gives us the privilege of hearing about Joe's life, and the hilarity ensues.

First and foremost, Joe is pathetic looking. He has a surgically attached mullet, porkchop sideburns, and facial hair that looks like the results of bad inbreeding. What's more, he is absolutely clueless about how stupid he looks. He's so worthless, in fact, that his parents abandoned him at the Grand Canyon, and it's this abandonment that begins his amazing journey.

Soon enough, we come to see Joe Dirt as not so pathetic, and we begin to empathize with him. He's just an honest guy, looking for his family and love, but just happens to look horrible.

There are far too many hilarious scenes to mention, but a few noteworthy ones are when he meets an Indian named Kicking Wing who owns a fireworks stand in the desert. In a matter of no time, the two are shooting fireworks into fuel, and causing massive explosions. The next thing you know, Joe Dirt is getting septic tanks dumped on his head, dog's ballls are getting frozen to winter porches, and beatdowns occur at oil derricks. All the while Joe is completely oblivious, spouting off lines like, "Life's a garden; dig it".

If you like to laugh out loud, then this is the movie for you. It's highly recommended. The entire movie provides laughs, and there are great cameos by several stars, namely Christopher Walken, who are intertwined in ingenious scenarios, one more outrageous than the previous. David Spade absolutely nails the Joe Dirt persona, and doesn't allow for a single dull second.

The NeverEnding Story

The NeverEnding Story
Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) made his first English-language film with this 1984 fantasy about a boy (Barret Oliver) visualizing the stories of a book he's reading. The imagined tale involves another boy, a warrior (Noah Hathaway), and his efforts to save the empire of Fantasia from a nemesis called the Nothing. Whether or not the scenario sticks in the memory, what does linger are the unique effects, which are not quite like anything else. Plenty of good fairy-tale characters and memorable scenes, and the film even encourages kids to read. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: A Fascinating, Unforgettable 80's Fantasy!

Bastian is a young boy of higher than average intelligence and imagination struggling to deal with bullies and the recent death of his mother. The hardships that have befallen his life, along with the hard instruction of an out-of-touch father, have taken their toll on Bastian's ability to fantasize and dream, convincing him that he must grow up and keep his feet on the ground. Luckily for him, while taking refuge in an old bookshop one day on his way to school, Bastian is introduced to "The NeverEnding Story". This mysterious book takes his imagination on a daring quest with a young warrior named Atreyu to save a child-like empress and the entire land of Fantasia from the mysterious and terrible Nothing that is sweeping across the land and destroying everything it touches.

If any movies from the now much celebrated 1980's can truly be called classics, "The NeverEnding Story" is without a doubt one of the most worthy. It was a time when fantasy films for young people were insanely popular, all with dazzling pre-CGI effects and eerie, otherworldly music, and this film is the finest example. Based on a famous German book (it's said that the author was not pleased with the film version), "The NeverEnding Story" is an exciting and magical tale about the restoration of a boy's imagination against great odds. The land and creatures of Fantasia, while sometimes rather ugly, are brilliantly brought to life, the cast is excellent, and every young boy growing up in the '80's was totally in love with beautiful Tami Stronach as the empress (now a lovely and accomplished dancer). We all also wanted a luck dragon of our own!

The Warner Bros. DVD release could use an update, as all the extras are in the form of text information (little tidbits about the characters and effects), but at least the film is presented in widescreen (on the flip side) and a trailer is included as well. There were two sequels made to "The NeverEnding Story", plus a cartoon series and something called "Tales from the NeverEnding Story," which I believe was a live-action TV series. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of that stuff, so I can't recommend or discourage seeking it out. However, you can't go wrong with the enchanting original!

Chef Boyardee Beefaroni, 7.5-Ounce Microwavable Bowls (Pack of 12)
Customer Review: Great Delivery, Good Product

The process of ordering it was quick and simple. The product itself isn't so bad. A quick instant snack that requires no prior refrigeration (very impt living in a dorm with tiny fridge). Not the healthiest thing but it actually has as many calories as a small bag of chips but more filling.

Minus 1 star because I like the ravioli better.

Dr. Seuss Inspired Recipes ? Your Kids Will Love These

What child doesn?t grow up with Dr. Seuss books? We have quite a few of them lying around the house. The kids love the silly characters and the rhymes. The Dr. Seuss inspired recipes that I?m about to share with you have been a great hit in my house. Of course the famous green eggs and ham are included, but there are also quite a few other snack and meal ideas. Create a fun Dr. Seuss inspired afternoon with some of these recipes and of course don?t forget to read a few of the books with your kids. (If you don?t own any, enjoy a trip to your local library.)

Green Eggs and Ham

This has to be the most famous Dr. Seuss inspired dish. Scramble a few eggs, add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to the mixture and cook as usual. You can serve a warmed up slice of ham with it, and if you want to go all out, brush the ham with a little green food coloring.

My kids love either biscuits, or mashed potatoes with this dish. Add a little food coloring (either green, or a complimentary color like red) to the biscuit dough or the finished mashed potatoes for even more fun.

Cat in The Hat Snack

Make the Cat?s Hat for a fun snack. All you need is a few Ritz crackers, gummy lifesavers (preferably in white/clear and red) and a little vanilla frosting. Put the Ritz cracker on a plate. Use a little bit of vanilla frosting to glue the first lifesaver on the cracker. ?Glue? more lifesavers on top of the first one alternating between red and white.

These snacks are so cute; you may want to take a picture of your child?s creation before it is devoured.

Wiggly Fish

This snack was inspired by ?One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish?. Prepare several different colors of Jello according to package directions and pour each flavor into a shallow pan. Use a fish shaped cookie cutter to cut the Jello into fish shapes. (If you don?t have a fish shaped cookie cutter you could also just cut fish shapes with a knife.) You can also add small pieces of fruit to the Jello mixture before it cools. This is a great way to sneak an extra serving of fruit into your child?s diet.

Pink Ink for The Yink

The Yink in ?One Fish, Two Fish? love to drink pink ink. Make your own version by combining a few strawberries (either fresh, or frozen and thawed) and some milk in a blender. Add a few drops of red food coloring if the ?ink? isn?t pink enough.

A Fruity Hat For The Cat

How about this for a fun Sunday breakfast? Whip up a batch of silver dollar pancakes and cut up some fresh strawberries. Grab some whipped cream and let the kids assemble the Cat?s hat by stacking pancakes, and strawberries on top of each other using the whipped cream as ?glue?.

Enjoy a few of these Dr. Seuss inspired snacks and meals with your family, or invite a few neighbor kids over for a Dr. Seuss party. Either way they are a lot of fun and a great way to bring some of the Seuss stories to life.

Spyro A Hero's Tail

Spyro A Hero's Tail

Spyro must save the Dragon Realms from an evil dragon who has planted life-sapping dark gems all over the Dragon Realms. Seek out and destroy all of the Dark Gems to return the lands back to normal. A Hero's Tail is the greatest Spyro adventure ever!

Customer Review: Worthy of the Spyro name

So, like most people say, this game is a bit of a departure from the first 3 games on the PS1. The biggest reason for that is that Insomniac is no longer at the helm. But regardless of it's differences, the game is still fun and certainly worthy of the Spyro name, unlike the last release Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly.

Different doesn't always equal bad, and that is quite true for this game. First for the worlds: This is probably the biggest difference from the old games. The old games had overworlds with portals to different levels. How this game differs is that there is just one huge world and accomplishing certain tasks during gameplay essentially opens up the next area. So instead of roaming around and choosing which level to enter, the gameplay is very linear. Finish the task in area A, move on the area B. Finish the task in B and move on to C.

Along the way there are side missions. Play as sparks in flying first-person-shooter style. Also is the introduction of a mole critter who helps Spyro out by searching underground for crystals. For these missions you play as the mole and kill spiders while making your way along the path which involves using puzzle solving skills and using special moves.

Basic movements and the camera are still the same. The music is a little different, though still light fare. Breath abilities are actually put to use unlike in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly.

So, yes, this game is different from past Spyro games, but to me that is half the fun. To me, the game makers wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't experiment a little with the games. Just keep a bit of an open mind and have fun. I certainly did.

This was fowarded to me.I reviewed it. Then i changed all my dedectors.

On Dec. 17, 2005, my department in Barre City , VT , responded to the worst fatal fire in our history. At a few minutes before 6 a.m., we were dispatched to a fire in a two-story wood-frame apartment building. The initial report was that there were people still in the building. The on-duty crew was met with heavy fire blowing from the second floor windows on side A and heavy smoke pushing through out. Additionally, the initial crew was advised, by bystanders, the apartment had two adults and four children still inside. The officer in charge quickly upgraded to a second alarm.

Before the arrival of the fire department, two Barre City police officers arrived on scene and attempted to enter the fire apartment, but were unsuccessful. They did make entry to the downstairs apartment and they reported a considerable amount of smoke inside. They stayed in the downstairs apartment, trying to listen for activity above them, but the smoke forced them out. These officers reported that they heard no smoke detectors coming from the second floor apartment, and incredibly, no smoke detectors sounding in the down stairs apartment. The detectors in the downstairs apartment were later tested and found to be operational.

Because of a water supply problem, initial crews conducted their searches without the protection of a hoseline. The fire conditions forced these crews out of the apartment two times before finally making it in through a bedroom window on the C side. In this room, an adult male was found and was extricated out the same window and down a ladder. At about this time, water had been established and the fire was effectively knocked down.

Crews next located three young girls together in one bedroom. Two were extricated down ladders and the third down an interior stairway. The next to be found was a young boy in another bedroom, who was extricated down an interior stairway. The final occupant to be found, an adult female, was found in the living room in the area of fire origin and was not extricated, for obvious reasons. In the end, a mother, three little girls and the little boy died. The father was airlifted to the nearest trauma center and has since recovered. A seventh occupant escaped on his own prior to our arrival and is also doing fine.

To add insult to injury, a few minutes after the last victim was transported to the hospital, we all learned that this family was related to our fire chief. All of a sudden, it wasn't someone else's tragedy anymore.

The area of origin was a living room couch. The exact cause has not been determined, but has been narrowed down to a cigarette, candle or Christmas lights. Based on the investigation, it is believed this began as a smoldering fire and eventually became a flaming fire. The time it remained a smoldering fire is unknown.

Smoke Detectors Did Not Activate

The apartment had three hardwired smoke detectors - one in the family room, one in the master bedroom and one in the girls bedroom. There is a report that early on a bystander may have heard a smoke detector. As stated earlier, the police officers, who were on scene very quickly, did not hear any coming from either apartment. No one from the fire service heard any operating smoke alarms.

There are many other details and events of this fire that I could share with you. Acts of heroism, compassion and desperation and more played out. I suspect I would be preaching to the choir, however. On some level, we all have been there. But for the purpose of telling this story, enough has been said.

For the next few months, this fire was all we talked about. Some had opinions and all had questions. We just couldn't figure out how so many people could get caught in a fire, still in their bedrooms, with working smoke detectors. In the early spring of 2006, we learned why, and have been doing our best to keep it from happening ever again. What I tell you next is all we didn't know.

My Chief, Peter John, attended a conference in a neighboring town presented by Deputy Chief Joe Fleming of the Boston Fire Department. During this conference, Chief Fleming discussed the differences between ionization and photoelectric smoke detector technology, among other issues related to this topic. When Chief John returned from this conference, he handed me a large stack of information he picked up, and told me the detectors in the apartment didn't activate.

The Fish Tank Test

I had never heard of such a thing before, and spent most of that night researching on the Internet to find out what I could. It didn't take me long to come upon some disturbing information. The most interesting site was from a group out of Australia . Their site, [...], shows a fish tank full of smoke and an ionization smoke detector inside that didn't make a sound. When a photoelectric smoke alarm was introduced to the smoke, it sounded almost immediately. That was to hard to believe. So we decided to try it ourselves.

Two days later, we had our own fish tank and created our own smoke outside the firehouse and we video taped it (see videos below). What happened was almost beyond words. We created thick, yellow/brown smoke that hurt to breath and placed an ionization smoke detector in it. It did not activate. Yet a photoelectric smoke detector activated after five seconds when exposed to the same smoke. The ionization smoke alarm did finally activate, but only after it was almost completely obscured by the smoke.

All of a sudden, the idea that a smoke detector was just a smoke detector was as foolish as saying a fire is just a fire. They are not the same. They are very different. And knowing the differences can save your life. Since this first test, we have conducted several tests in an abandoned house, testing both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms in different types of smoke.

Ionization Smoke Alarms

An ionization smoke alarm has two plates that have a small voltage going across them. Added into this mix is a small amount of radioactive material called AMERICIUM-241. This material ionizes the oxygen and nitrogen in the air. Basically what this means is that an electron is taken off from each atom. These electrons are now considered free and have a negative charge to them. The atoms, on the other hand, now have a positive charge. The electrons, with the negative charge, are attracted to the positively charged plate. The atoms, with the positive charge, are attracted to the negatively charged plate. The amount of electrical current traveling between the two plates is monitored by the detector.

As small particles enter the chamber, they interrupt the electrical current between the plates causing the electrical current to drop. This is what causes the horn to activate.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

A photoelectric smoke alarm works all together different. A beam of light is projected inside the chamber so that it does not come in contact with a sensor called a photo-detector. When smoke enters the chamber, it scatters the light so that it reaches the sensor. The light reaching the sensor is what causes the horn to activate.

Just like a smoke detector is not just a smoke detector, smoke is not just smoke. Different stages of fire create different types of smoke. A flaming fire creates smoke particles that are 0.01 - 3 microns in size. Smoldering fires create smoke particles that are 0.3 - 10 microns in size. Smoke from a smoldering fire is referred to as "Cold Smoke". A flaming fire produces a large volume of smoke with particles that are 0.01 - 3 microns in size. These small particles fill an ionization chamber with sufficient quantity to disrupt the current between the metal plates. This disruption then causes the horn to activate. These small particles will also scatter the light in a photoelectric smoke alarm, causing this horn to activate as well. Generally, however, the photoelectric is slightly slower to activate. The difference in activation time during a flaming fire is measured in seconds.

A smoldering fire produces a large volume of smoke with particles that are 0.3 - 10 microns in size. These larger particles still enter the ionization chamber. However, because of the larger size, not enough can fit into the chamber to disrupt the current. The current is able to, essentially, filter between the particles without enough of a disruption to sound the horn. Because of this, the ionization alarm can be in an environment full of this cold smoke and yet it may not activate. The photoelectric alarm is much better at detecting this smoke. As the smoke enters the alarm, the smoke scatters the light causing the alarm to activate. In almost every test we have done, the photoelectric alarms have sounded before we could see any smoke in the room.

What Are the Differences?

In order to illustrate this better, think of smoke in terms of water. Ask yourself this question - What is the difference between water from the tap and the steam coming out of your shower? The answer is temperature. It is still water, but because the water coming from your shower is hotter, it is in the form of steam. The particle sizes are smaller. Smoke acts the same way, the hotter the smoke, the smaller the particles. The colder the smoke, the larger the particles.

Taking this a step further, what happens to the steam as it travels away from the shower? It cools down. As it cools, the particles combine with other particles eventually creating water droplets that you can see on the walls and windows. Again, the same is true of smoke. As the smaller, hot particles travel away from the heat source, the individual particles cool and combine with other particles. This is a process called agglomeration. The cooler they get, the larger the particles become. If this hot smoke has to travel a distance to reach an ionization smoke alarm, it may have cooled sufficiently to essentially create cold smoke. This cold smoke with larger particle sizes may not activate the ionization alarm. However, regardless of the distance traveled, this same smoke will activate the photoelectric alarms simply because of how the alarms operate.

So what do we do now? Education and legislation - we need to make sure that the differences between these types of detectors are known by everyone. If the public really understood the differences and how unprotected they are without both types, most folks would take care of themselves. Additionally, we need to push law makers to force home builders and manufactures to include both technologies in the homes they build.

Here in Barre City , we are advocating duel sensor smoke alarms, those with both ionization and photoelectric sensors built in. There is no way to tell where a fire will start, or what type of fire you will have. A dual sensor smoke alarm will protect against both types. Existing homes can either replace the ionization alarms with dual sensor alarms, or supplement them with photoelectric alarms. In kitchens, where the ionization alarms are routinely activated by cooking which then causes the occupants to remove the batteries, we are advocating stand alone photoelectric alarms. This will cut down on these nuisance alarms and the likelihood that the batteries will be removed causing the alarm to be ineffective.

Carbon Monoxide vs. Smoke Alarms

When you add carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to the mix, you are now talking about three technologies. We are advocating a stand alone CO alarm. There are two reasons for this. First, CO alarms need to be replaced every five years where smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years. When you combine a CO and smoke sensor in one detector, that detector is only as good as its weakest link and in this case, the CO sensor, is just five years. The other reason is how CO travels in the spaces. Because it is essentially the same weight as air, CO travels with the normal air currents. We advocate placing CO alarms at the same level of the heads of the sleeping occupants on the floor they sleep on. If there is a second CO alarm, we advocate that one to be placed closer to the ceiling, again, on the floor they sleep on. It goes without saying, however, that each floor should be protected with alarms.

Cost is a huge factor for everyone. Dual sensor alarms cost more than a stand alone photoelectric or ionization alarm. The dual sensor alarms in my home cost about $23.00 each, where a stand alone photoelectric costs around $12.00. For folks that are not able to afford the dual sensor alarms, we tell them to use a stand alone photoelectric alarms. Even though it is slightly slower than the ionization alarm at detecting a flaming fire (30 seconds or less on the average), it is considerably faster at detecting a smoldering fire (30 - 40 minutes on the average). It is these smoldering fires at night that are the most deadly.

As a fire service, we tell people to protect themselves with smoke alarms. Although we have not been wrong, we have not been completely right either. We still have a huge problem in this country of homes without any smoke alarms, and any smoke alarm is better than no smoke alarm. But we need to tell the public to have both types of technology in their homes. It is their families at stake. It is your families at stake. The only hope we have to get out of a burning building at night is for our smoke alarms to sound early. If they don't, the occupants will die. We know. We saw it.

Talking to Your Kids About Drugs: Why and How to Get the Dialogue Going

When you are a parent, there are many things to worry about. Keeping your kids safe is at the top of the list. First, you worry about the pacifier your infant dropped on the floor--so you pick it up and wash it with soap and water. Next, your toddler isn't eating enough vegetables, so you do your best to hide some veggies in his meat loaf. Then, you bite your nails as your second grader scales the tallest tree in the yard. You want to run and catch him when he starts to slip, but you see that he's beaming with excitement, so you stay watchful and quiet--careful not to spoil his fun.

As the kids grow older, the dangers they are faced with become more intense. One danger heavy on the minds of parents these days is substance abuse. And for good reason. With the popularity of "designer" drugs on the rise, and all the peer pressure kids are faced with, the worries parents encounter are mounting.

The Usual and Unusual Suspects

Sure, it's the usual suspects; experimenting with marijuana and alcohol that begin a pattern of self-destruction, but be aware, there are new drugs on the block, and they can be found in your medicine chest. According the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, the menu of drugs kids and teens are using is changing. They report 1 in 5 teens has tried Vicodin (a narcotic pain reliever) to get high, and 1 in 11 has admitted to getting high on cough medicine.

They also report a number of teens now "party" with other prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Along with the other illicit drugs out there that pose a dangerous risk to our kids, it's difficult not to be alarmed. The Partnership for a Drug-Free America (www.drugfree.org) is arming parents with need-to-know information about the risks of dangerous substances.

A local program reaching out

On the local front, there are programs that are taking action. Program coordinator for the Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT), Paul Grafer, stresses the need for a proactive, honest dialogue between parents and their children about substance abuse. He oversees programs emphasizing leadership and character for young people in 40 districts in the New York Metropolitan area.

SALT trains thousands of high school athletes to serve as role models and mentors in their school districts to 5th graders. If you think 5th grade is too young to begin a dialogue about drugs--think again. National statistics show that the average age for experimentation with drugs and alcohol is 11 years old.

How does this program help? The SALT Program promotes healthy, positive behaviors and decisions. Included in this philosophy is a commitment to life long activeness and playing sports for enjoyment, health benefits, and to obtain life-skills; and, remaining substance abuse free by developing proactive, real-life refusal skills and strategies to navigate a culture of underage drug abusers (alcohol, tobacco, and steroids). The SALT Program is offered at Adelphi University in Garden City. For more information visit http://www.adelphi.edu/communityservices/sli/pdw.php

On Long Island

The grips of drugs are known to be prevalent on big city streets, but they are a problem here on Long Island. Suffolk County Police Officer Daryl Quinones explains, his experiences have given him great insight and compassion to those who are drug addicted and the knowledge that even experimenting with the "softer" drugs can easily lead a kid down a path of self-destruction and crime.

He suggests that parents must be truthful, and "lay it all out there' for kids to understand what may happen if they fall under the spell of drugs and alcohol and stresses the importance of speaking up before it's too late. "As a police officer I have spoken to teenagers about these issues upon parents' request," he says. "And on certain occasions, years down the road, I'll see the parents and they will thank me for turning the kid around." Quinones has seen the consequences when the child doesn't listen: they land out in the system for some drug related crime.

Expert Advice

So how do you get a child to listen? What do you say? When should you say it? I asked Dr. Susan Bartell, psychologist and author in Port Washington specializing in tween and teens, to shed some light on this important issue.

Q: What age do you recommend bringing up the issue?

A: You can start talking to kids about drugs beginning at six or seven--by talking about smoking cigarettes because that is something they see in their world and can understand that it is "bad".

As they get older (about ten) they can begin to understand the issue of other drugs. Middle school kids are ready for direct conversations, naming drugs (marijuana in particular) and explaining that they are illegal and dangerous.

Q: Can you give me some tips about how to make the "talk" go smooth?

A: With middle schoolers, look for a "teachable moment"...a TV anti-drug ad, a TV show when kids are drinking, smoking, using drugs and ask them what they think about it; then give your feelings in a low-keyed way, explaining that it is something you feel strongly about.

As kids get older--young high schoolers, the conversations need to begin to revolve around their social life: what would they do at a party if there was alcohol/drugs there. Help them come up with ways of handling it that aren't judgmental or critical.

Q: What's the biggest mistake parents make dealing with drug issues and their children?

A: They are too preachy, too critical of kids and don't give enough problem solving strategies. They also don't listen for their kids' concerns about how to handle peer pressure, or curiosity about drugs.

Q: How can parents be proactive about deterring their children from taking drugs?

A: First, being clear that you disapprove, next, making sure that you drive your child to and from parties or get-togethers--they'll be much less likely to use if they know you're picking them up. Don't let them get rides from other kids.

Q: Is there anything else parents need to know?

A: Conversations about drugs must include alcohol--which is also a drug and is actually usually the "Gateway" drug to others. Parents often feel that alcohol is okay, when in reality their kids can become alcoholics without them realizing it.

In addition, parents need to look for signs of chronic drug and alcohol use like: grades dropping, social isolation, secretive phone conversations, new friends that they don't let you meet; dropping old friends; sleeping a lot, changes in personality; sudden depression; sudden mood swings.

When it comes to raising kids today, it really does take a village. Keeping your child out of harm's way is no easy task, but experts agree that staying involved in you're your child's life-- is a great start. When they're young and scaling that tall tree, you stand back and let them giggle their way down, but when it comes to drugs, parents cant afford to be silent. There's too much at stake.

Guess How Much I Love You

Guess How Much I Love You
All children want reassurance that their parents' love runs wide and deep. In Guess How Much I Love You, a young rabbit named Little Nutbrown Hare thinks he's found a way to measure the boundaries of love. In a heartwarming twist on the "I-can-do-anything-you-can-do-better" theme, Little Nutbrown Hare goes through a series of declarations regarding the breadth of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms, or as high as his hops, Little Nutbrown Hare is fondly one-upped by the elder rabbit's more expansive love.

Anita Jeram's illustrations are bound to elicit an "aw" from even the sternest of readers; these loving rabbits are expressive, endearing, and never cloying. In turn, Sam McBratney tells a simple bedtime story of sweet familial love with humor, insight, and a delightful surprise at the end. Children and parents will love snuggling up for this one--a treat to be read again and again, just before the lights are turned out. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1994 by Sam McBratney. About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of ski-wear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, Chairman of the Board, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO, lead the company.

Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that, it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign.

The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

It has all the ingresdients found in Ovaltine - but it also has the all important proteins. SEVEN grams per serving. Generally, growing children require about 2g of protein per kilogram of weight (or about 1g per pound), so one drink provides about a third of my 24lb daughter's requirements.

A nice surprise - I actually received a case of 24-BOTTLES instead of cans. Not sure if it was an error, but it made my day.

Customer Review: Great shoe

My son is a Diego fanatic and loves to wear his shoes! He loves to show his friends at daycare the flashing lights. I think the shoes are great quality for the price.

Customer Review: Not a great item for baby or toddler, but quality product.

I purchased one of these in each size for each of my 3 children, and while the product met my expectations quality wise, this is not a great item for a baby or toddler. My youngest is 15 months, has no problems holding the bottle or drinking from it, I would recommend if you are buying this to get a pouch, as when filled with cold liquids the container itself is very cold to hold. She really likes the bottle and the only reason I won't buy her another until she is older is that the flow from the mouth piece is fast and very "airy" she is swallowing as much air as she is liquids, causing her to "choke" on it a lot. I like the fact that with the lid on and cap closed this bottle is spill proof, and even when left open and on its side very little liquid will leak out. Overall this is a great product, but more for kids who are a little older. (3 or so)

Richard Scarry's Best Busy People Video Ever!: (Kids First Award winner)

Richard Scarry's Best Busy People Video Ever!: (Kids First Award winner)
Huckle, Lowly Worm, and rest of the schoolchildren are inspired by their teacher's discussion about different kinds of occupations and what people in those fields do all day. The kids run to the schoolyard for some make-believe, playing at what they'd like to be when they grow up. Huckle becomes a grocer like his father, Freddie Fox a baker specializing in mud pies, and Rhonda Raccoon a truck driver delivering baked goods. Consistent with the usual excellence of the Richard Scarry video series, Best Busy People introduces the concept of how a complicated society functions, with everyone's job having an impact on everyone else's. The jokes are funny, the songs are sweet, and Scarry's popular book What Do People Do All Day? makes great supplementary reading. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: Not enough time to enjoy it

It's a nicely narrated Richard Scarry story, but it cuts too short, not allowing a child time to learn the main characters. For the price I paid I would have preferred 2 or 3 Scarry episodes.
